The Hoax Hunters are a team comprised of a few archetype characters, each with a small twist. The tough guy with a gun, the good looking girl with powers, and a scientist who appears to be a zombie of some sort.
Here in the #0 issue they journey to Russia to investigate a rumor for their television show. Apparently there have been sightings of an American astronaut from 1960 who has a strange connection to crows.
By the end of the issue the mystery is revealed, and the astronaut (now named, Murder) joins the Hoax Hunters team.
For a first (issue #0 in this case) issue there is an odd choice to use two artists. I don't particularly like either, and the sudden change from one to the other is jarring, terribly jarring in my opinion. It hurt the book a lot, and the bad art was already bothering me, so that sudden shift in style was very unwelcome.
Overall I was less than impressed by this zero issue, HOWEVER, there is a preview for issue #1 at the back of the book, and it looks surprisingly promising. The art, for one, is leagues better than what is in this issue, and the plot sounds interesting.
While reading this issue I thought, "well, guess I won't be reading this anymore", but after the preview at the end, they've got at least one more chance to hook me. I'll review issue #1 next month and let you know how it goes.
