Justice League United was named Justice League Canada for the #0 issue and before the title's official launch, only to be renamed Justice League United to give it a more universal appeal, but really, is there any appeal here?
This team is can hardly be considered a team, but rather it seems like a bunch of B-list characters thrown together with the hopes that their combined fan bases can support an ongoing monthly team book. It's not that there aren't good characters here, because there are many, but there is no sense of cohesion or direction what so ever. None of the characters are receiving any development, and the story line here is so disjointed and sloppy that after four issues, I can barely even begin to tell you what is going on or why.
Jeff Lemire has increasingly been given more high profile assignments at DC (presumably to keep him with the company), but it seems like he either doesn't care about this book, or doesn't have a clear vision of what he wants it to be. I say this as a surprised reader who has been overwhelmingly shocked at the poor quality of this title, as Lemire has proven to be a more than capable writer over the last few years, successfully delivering great interpretations of both Animal Man and Green Arrow.
While Mike McKone is delivering typically great work artistically here, everything else about this title is a train wreck. Adam Strange and Alanna seem nothing at all like their former versions, and none of the characters have any chemistry what so ever. While it is obvious that Lemire is trying to recreate the Blue Beetle/ Booster Gold magic of the 1990's Justice League with Animal Man and Green Arrow, it just isn't coming across as anything other than forced. The stilted dialogue and plodding storyline are better left untold, and my hopes for the future of this title have all but evaporated a mere four issues in.
This has been a recurring problem with Justice League books over the years. While there have been successful runs on Justice League books, none of them could be sustained, and many of them failed from the beginning, and unfortunately, that's what we are seeing here.
As a life long Justice League fan, this is a hard reality to face, but this title is awful, and it needs to be canceled.
