This was a fast and furious two part crossover that focused more on the Jackal and his cloning ambitions than on the first meeting between the Otto Octavius Spidey and Kaine, but it was a very good introduction never the less.
I was curious as to how Kaine could possibly meet the 'new' Spider-Man and not instantly realize that something was wrong, but with the brief nature of the encounter, the history between Kaine and Peter and the emotional presence of the Jackal, writer Christoper Yost managed to navigate through that tricky situation with ease. It never felt unnatural that Kaine didn't suspect something was wrong with Peter.
Both parts of this story were well written, but the art over in Superior Spider-Man Team Up was superior to the mish-mash of art found here in Scarlet Spider, which felt all over the place, and for the main portion of the story, I was not a fan of In-Kyuk Lee's style.
Regardless, this was a great setup encounter to lay some ground work for future encounters between Kaine and the new Superior Spider-Man, and it fit in naturally since Kaine was already in New York from his previous adventure with Wolverine and the X-Men.
I was happy to see our hero back in Houston at the end of this issue though. There are more than enough heroes in NYC (always have been in the Marvel U), and we needed our only here back here in Houston.
Next issue, Ben Reilly returns, so that should satisfy some of the fanboys and girls out there!
