After increasing fan demand in recent years, Marvel has given us not only a relaunch of Spider-Man 2099, but one that sports an incredible creative team of Peter David and Will Sliney.
Peter David needs no introduction, of course, but for those less familiar with Will Sliney's work, I would recommend you check out the recently-ended Fearless Defenders series, where Sliney turned in month after month of incredible work. Upon hearing that this would be the creative team on Spidey 2099, I knew I would have to check it out.
Our story starts off with a brief overview of how Miguel got to the current period in the Marvel 616 Universe, and then launches us directly into the events of a day-in-the-life of Miguel O'Hara. How he got here to the current timeline has been a pretty great story itself, and if you are unfamiliar with that, take a look back at the recently-ended series, Superior Spider-Man, for further information.
Here in issue #1 of Spidey 2099, Miguel crosses paths with a mysterious bounty hunter from the future, sent back in time to our era to eliminate him from ever existing. This encounter takes place at Miguel's place of employment, Alchemax. For those familiar with the 2099 universe, or with recent happenings in Superior Spider-Man, you know how pivotal Alchemax is to the development of the Marvel Universe's future in 2099. It is by no coincidence that Miguel is working there, or that Peter David chose to launch this title with a story set within the confines of the Alchemax world headquarters. The setting plays not only an important role in introducing the company as a character in Spidey 2099, but also in setting up an interesting narrative development towards the end of this issue that will certainly have significant impact on the title going forward.
This is a great first issue for both fans of Spider-Man 2099, and non-fans alike.
It is interesting to imagine the possibilities for Miguel O'Hara now that the exists in the current main continuity of the Marvel Universe, and it is a well-deserved promotional push for a character that has remained so important to such a large fan base for many many years, even though he didn't have a book (or universe, even) to appear in. With a powerhouse team like David and Sliney guiding this book, I think this will be one to follow along with for quite some time.
